Back Pain Is Common. Staying Stuck Should Not Be.
Low back pain is one of the most common and costly health problems in the world. The World Health Organization reports that low back pain affected 619 million people globally in 2020 and is projected to affect 843 million people by 2050. WHO also describes low back pain as the single leading cause of disability worldwide.
In the United States, chronic pain is also a major public health issue. CDC data from 2021 estimated that 20.9 percent of U.S. adults, or 51.6 million people, experienced chronic pain, and 6.9 percent, or 17.1 million people, experienced high-impact chronic pain that substantially restricted daily activities.
The American College of Physicians notes that low back pain is one of the most common reasons for physician visits in the United States and has been associated with major direct healthcare costs and indirect costs from missed work and reduced productivity.
But the most important question is not just, “How many people have back pain?” The better question is: Why do some people recover while others keep cycling through pain, stiffness, flare-ups, medications, imaging, injections, and frustration? That is where OWC’s approach is different.

Most back pain care focuses on where it hurts. At OWC, we look at why the system is failing.
In many non-traumatic cases, pain is not the first sign of a problem. Clinically, we often see decreased range of motion, altered posture, poor joint mechanics, guarded movement, poor hip or foot function, and nervous system compensation before pain becomes obvious.

What is Back Pain?
Back pain is discomfort, stiffness, spasm, aching, sharp pain, burning, or loss of function involving the spine, pelvis, muscles, ligaments, discs, joints, nerves, or surrounding connective tissue.
Back pain may stay local, or it may radiate into the hip, glute, thigh, leg, or foot. When pain travels into the extremities, it may involve nerve irritation, disc stress, spinal joint dysfunction, inflammation, muscle compression, altered gait, or compensation from the hips, knees, ankles, or feet.
The American College of Physicians recommends non-drug, noninvasive options as initial care for many acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain cases. These options include spinal manipulation, exercise, multidisciplinary rehabilitation, mindfulness-based stress reduction, low-level laser therapy, and other conservative approaches depending on the case.

Why Back Pain Can Keep Coming Back
The pain was treated, but the pattern was not
Pain medication, injections, rest, and passive care may reduce symptoms temporarily, but they may not correct the underlying movement pattern, instability, nerve irritation, inflammation, or recovery problem. Dr. Tim’s prior article used the smoke detector analogy: taking the batteries out of the alarm may quiet the noise, but it does not put out the fire.
Range of motion was never restored
When range of motion is limited, the body compensates. Compensation can shift stress into the discs, joints, ligaments, muscles, hips, pelvis, or extremities. OWC monitors movement quality, not just pain intensity.
The nervous system is guarding
Pain changes how the brain controls the body. Muscles may tighten reflexively, movement may become smaller, and the body may protect one side. OWC’s neuro-chiropractic framework treats pain as a brain-body processing issue, not only a local tissue issue.

Earlier Care Often Means Less Care

A workers’ compensation study on occupational low back pain found that 89 percent of claimants who used chiropractic care initiated care within 30 days. Among those who started within that period, 48 percent ended chiropractic care within the first 30 days. Shorter chiropractic care duration was associated with lower recurrence of work disability and 8.6 percent shorter work-disability duration, although the authors noted that the observational design prevents firm conclusions about causality.

Parking and access are easier than many patients expect.
