What is whiplash?

Although whiplash is commonly associated with rear-end auto accidents, it can also happen from sideimpact collisions, falls, sports injuries, skiing accidents, cycling crashes, physical trauma, or any sudden force that overwhelms the neck’s ability to stabilize. Whiplash is not one single injury. It is a pattern of injury. That is why two people can be in the same accident and have very different symptoms, recovery timelines, and care needs.

Why whiplash can be more than neck pain

The neck is not just a stack of bones. It is a neurologic and mechanical crossroads. The upper neck helps coordinate head movement, eye tracking, balance and spatial awareness, muscle tone, headache patterns, jaw and facial tension, autonomic regulation, blood flow and sensory input to the brain, and communication between the body and brain. Common whiplash symptoms

Pain and stiffness may include neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder pain, low back pain, muscle tightness, reduced range of motion, pain turning the head while driving, or pain looking down at a phone or computer. Head, jaw, and nerve symptoms may include headaches, migraine-like symptoms, jaw pain, numbness, tingling, arm pain, burning sensations, or hand weakness. Why symptoms may be delayed

Immediately after an accident, adrenaline and stress chemistry can temporarily mask pain. Why standard imaging may not tell the whole story

Emergency rooms and urgent care centers are excellent at ruling out serious injuries such as fractures, dislocations, bleeding, or life-threatening trauma. That is important. But many whiplash-related injuries are functional, soft tissue, ligamentous, or motion-based. A standard Xray, CT, or MRI may not fully explain why a person has pain, stiffness, dizziness, headaches, or neurologic symptoms. When clinically appropriate, OWC may recommend or review flexion and extension motion studies to better understand how the cervical spine moves under controlled positions. These studies can help assess whether there is abnormal motion, instability, or mechanical dysfunction that may not be visible on a single static image. We do not order imaging casually. We use it when it may help clarify the injury, guide care, document objective findings, or identify whether referral is needed.
